On Thursday, September 5, 2024, a significant event marked the 18th National Anti-Human Trafficking Day in Kailali. Held at the Women and Children Safe House, Ward No. 2, Godavari Municipality, Kailai District, the program combined efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking with a heartfelt food distribution drive. This initiative was jointly organized by Jyoti Community Development Service Nepal (Jyoti Nepal) and the Godavari Municipality, bringing together key stakeholders in the ongoing battle against human trafficking.

The event was a remarkable step in ensuring both practical support and awareness for those most at risk of exploitation. With human trafficking remaining a grave issue in the Far-Western Province, the collaboration between local authorities and non-governmental organizations is vital in combating this pervasive crime.

Food distribution at the safe house was a symbolic yet powerful gesture. It highlighted the ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable women and children, providing them with physical nourishment and a sense of safety within the community.

The program was chaired by the Deputy Mayor of Godavari Municipality, Sharda Devi Rokaya, a leader who is recognized for her dedication to human rights and social welfare. Her involvement underscored the municipality's unwavering support for anti-trafficking initiatives. Other key figures who attended included:

  • Haridatta Bhatt, Chief Administrative Officer of Godavari Municipality
  • Dan Singh Bhandari, Police Inspector of Malakheti Area Police Office, along with other officers
  • Janaki Malasi, Chairperson of the Women and Children Safe House
  • Various social workers, journalists, and staff from Jyoti Nepal’s Kailali branch
Their presence not only added gravitas to the event but also represented the unity of various sectors in the fight against human trafficking.

The success of this event speaks volumes about the power of collaboration. From government officials to police officers, social workers, and journalists, the collective effort demonstrated the community's resolve to tackle human trafficking head-on. Public awareness is an essential component in preventing this heinous crime, and initiatives like this one play a critical role in educating communities and protecting vulnerable populations.

Human trafficking remains a global issue, but with sustained effort, local initiatives can drive change, one community at a time. The end goal? To bring an end to human trafficking—because every life matters.
